DEATH ON THE ICE
The original idea of this novel was to tell the story behind Captain Oates, a man generally known only for his famous last words: ‘I’m just going outside and I may be some time’. Of course, it then grew into the tale of Captain Scott, Shackleton and Scott’s bohemian wife, Katherine.
The biggest compliment I got for this book is the fact it is recommended by the Antarctic Heritage Trust (see www.heritage-antarctica.org, or in UK www.ukaht.org), the people who look after Scott and Shackleton’s huts down on the ice.
“Death on the Ice is also an excellent read – [Ryan] has done a great job on pulling the main elements of Captain Scott’s 1910 expedition and attempt for the South Pole – personally recommended” - Fiona Wills (AHT NZ)
